Known for his good-humored good judgment, Buryl had a natural sense of the appropriate solution to thorny issues and the logical approach to the task at hand. When faced with a quandary over methodology, friends of his I know would sometimes ask, half jokingly and half in seriousness, “What would Buryl do?”

Buryl was a true renaissance man, a jack of all trades and master of many. Plus he was always willing to share his expertise knowledge and help. We feel very lucky to have known him since 1970. We were at the U of Iowa together, we lived together, we played Rugby together, and we had many adventures together. He was a wonderful human being. We will all miss him very much. My heart goes out to his family.

We're so very sorry to learn of the loss of Buryl. When we lived in Marshalltown and worked at the Chicago and Northwestern railroad with him, when he learned we liked rhubarb, he sectioned off some of his plants and brought them over and planted them for us. We enjoyed them for many many years before leaving Marshalltown. He was the most thoughtful person. His family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

My family was privileged to have Buryl as a close neighbor for the last 30 years. He loved new challenges and was the first person in line to help anyone who needed it. Buryl had more skills and broader knowledge of many subjects than anyone I have ever known. His quest for new knowledge took him in many directions. When he mastered a subject and it was no longer challenging, he would venture off in a new direction seeking a new challenge. Buryl was a great friend, a great father and an exemplary human being.

We are so very sorry to hear about Buryl. He will be greatly missed by all of us at the Greenhouse. We will miss most his grin when he would greet us with a joke or funny comment that made us smile. With all of his knowledge of systems and equipment, he could repair ANYTHING!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
With Deepest Sympathy,
The Swifts
