Obituary of Lela M. Scholz

Lela M. (Staubus) Scholz, 95, of Newton, the daughter of C.A. and Delia (Smith) Staubus, was born January 13, 1915 in Newton, Iowa. She was a graduate of Newton Senior High School, Class of 1932, and continued her education in business school at Des Moines University of Commerce. Lela was employed by the Newton National Bank, the Automatic Washing Machine Company, and during World War II by Maytag. On February 23, 1938, Lela was united in marriage with Frank Joseph Scholz in Newton. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ for 78 years, Campfire Board, Jasper County Cancer Society, and was instrumental in the merger of the YWCA and YMCA into one organization. Lela liked to play bridge, golf, tennis, cook, sew, knit and was an avid reader. Lela passed away on Wednesday evening, March 24, 2010, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Preceding Lela in death were her parents; her husband of 64 years, Frank, on May 11, 2002; and a grandson in infancy, Mark William LeVere. Private family services will be held, with Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials in Lela's name may be given to: Hospice of Jasper County. Burial was in the Union Cemetery. Lela is survived by her daughter Jolie (Bill) LeVere of Shenandoah, Iowa; her two grandchildren: Beth (Kevin) Litterer of Lake View, Iowa and Michael (Kris) LeVere of Waukee, Iowa; and her four great-grandchildren: Nolan and Lauren Litterer, and Noah and Emily LeVere. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery, Newton on Thursday at .
