Edna Armelda Hasselbrink, 99, the daughter of William and Nina (Rice) Badger, was born March 25, 1909 in the Rock Creek area, Jasper County, Iowa. Her family moved to farm just east of Grinnell, Iowa, and she graduated from the Grinnell High School, Class of 1927. On March 1, 1930, Edna was united in marriage with Louis Albert Hasselbrink in Des Moines, Iowa. They would live in Kellogg, Iowa over fifty years, and were active members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Edna was a church leader and taught Sunday School. Louis was active with the Holmdahl Baseball Park in Kellogg, so Edna cooked hamburgers for sandwiches, to help the cause. She was active as PTA President of Kellogg schools and Precinct Committee Chairman for the Democratic Party in Kellogg. In 1988, Edna moved to the Newton, Iowa area, and was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She had devoted her life to her husband, children, family and friends. She enjoyed supporting her children and then grandchildren in all school musical and sporting activities. She loved her gardening, playing cards and was a wonderful cook, especially in making pies. Edna passed away Thursday morning, August 21, 2008 in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Louis; her sister Lela Laskewitz; and her three brothers: Walter, Robert and Cleve Badger. Those left to honor Edna's memory include her daughter Joan Mason of Newton; her son Roger (Joanne) Hasselbrink of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her four grandchildren: Douglas (Mary) Mason, David Mason, Angela (Torrey) French and Allison (Andrew) Griesel; three great-grandchildren: Cayden, Molly and Derek; three great-great grandchildren: Beau, Meadow and Kaia; a sister-in-law Inez Badger of Marshalltown, Iowa; her many nieces and nephews; and many good neighbors and friends. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials in Edna's name are being designated to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church or Kellogg Historical Society.
