Gloria McCuen, the daughter of Lyle and Mabel Solomon Lathrop, was born September 27, 1929, in Marshalltown, Iowa. She attended the Marshalltown High School and was graduated with the Class of 1947. Gloria then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and received a degree in Journalism and Teaching in 1951. She married Edwin R. McCuen on February 3, 1951 in Iowa City, Iowa. They moved to Newton, Iowa in 1952. Gloria was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family. She was an avid reader and enjoyed antiques and collectibles. Gloria L. McCuen, 79, of Newton, Iowa died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center, Newton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Lyle Lathrop. Those left to honor the memory of Gloria include her husband: Ed R. McCuen of Newton, son and daughter-in-law Paul and Sarah McCuen of Newton, daughter Anne Southern of Newton and son John McCuen of Newton, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister Joan Johnson of Newton and five nieces and nephews. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. No public service is being planned. Memorials in Gloria's name have been designated to Hospice of Jasper County.
