Obituary of Lorraine E. Potter

Please share a memory of Lorraine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lorraine E. Potter, daughter of John and Margaret Atwood, was born on January 20th, 1951 in Newton, lowa. She attended Newton Community schools and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1969. She also took a few classes through DMACC in Des Moines.

On July 19, 1969, Lorraine was united in marriage with Jeffrey Dean Potter. As she frequently stated: "He is absolutely the best thing that ever happened to me". After working for the Social Security Administration for several years, she "retired" and became a "homemaker" at the suggestion of her adoring husband.

She loved spending time with her beloved husband of 53 years. They had no children, but had a long succession of adored/spoiled Pugs. She enjoyed gardening and landscaping, and DIY projects with Jeff. She even dug a very large Koi pond by herself. She and Jeff traveled throughout the Southwestern US several times in their motorhome (with their Pugs, of course!), stopping a few times in Arizona to pick up her older sister, Sharon, to join their travels. She and Jeff also enjoyed many, many camping trips with her father.

When Jeff died (at home, as he wished) on July 20, 2022 – one day after their 53rd wedding anniversary - Lorraine was devastated. She continued to live in their beloved home in the country for some time, but eventually lost her battle with severe depression following Jeff's years-long struggles with many health problems, and his resulting death and passed away in her home on Friday, March 15. She was preceded in death by her husband Jeff, her father and mother, her brother Robert, her sister Sharon, and Sharon's son Scott.

Those left to honor her memory are her nephew Christopher Atwood; cherished neighbors/loving friends Duane and Doneta Sullivan; sister-in-law Diane Potter; brothers-in-law Bruce (Jody) Potter & Craig Potter; nephews Erik and Andrew Potter; and many other nephews and nieces.

Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with arrangements.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 30 from 2-4pm at the Newton American Legion,1101 West 4th St S, Newton, IA 50208, with visitation and sharing. There will be no funeral service or graveside service. She will be cremated and her ashes interred with those of her beloved husband Jeff, at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. In lieu of flowers, she requests anonymous donations to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
