Obituary of Elwyn Morris Swihart
Elwyn Morris Swihart, the son of Morris Harold and Metha Mae (Griebel) Swihart, was born August 14, 1925 on the family farm northwest of Newton, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm and later moved to Missouri and then to Minnesota. In 1946, Elwyn married Addie Elaine Athey in Minnesota. In 1958, they would move to South Dakota where Elwyn went to work in the Homestake Goldmine, in Lead, SD. Elwyn and the family moved back to Newton, Iowa in 1966, where he began working for the Maytag Company. He retired in 1988 from the heat treat department. Elwyn enjoyed working the land and being outdoors. He could be found, many an evening, tinkering outside on his many projects.
Elwyn died peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 18, 2018, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 93 years old. Elwyn was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Addie; a daughter, Linda; two great grandsons; and five brothers.
Those left to honor Elwyn’s memory include his daughter, Brenda (Richard) Young; grandchildren Heather Young, Shilo (Young) Steven and Chris Young, daughter Janice Babcock; grandchildren Danny, Staci and Misti Hodge; his fourteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and his brother and sister-in-law, Gary (Mary) Swihart.
A celebration of Elwyn’s life will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be designated to the Metz Community Church or the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and may be left at the funeral home.
