Norma Jean went with the Lord, her Savior, Monday, September 26, 2016, at Mercy/Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Norma Jean Hollingsworth Borchert, 89, was born at home in rural Milo, Iowa, on February 3, 1927, to Lester and Alice (Conn) Hollingsworth. She attended country school and graduated from Melcher High School, Class of 1944.
On October 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Leland Eugene Borchert in Knoxville. This union was blessed with Steven Borchert (Pasadena, TX), Gary Borchert (Prior Lake, MN), Elizabeth (Mike) Stout (Newton, IA) and Deborah Borchert (Newton, IA).
Upon her husband's deployment to Europe, Norma was employed as a switchboard operator with Bellamy Telephone Company in Knoxville, Iowa. She continued as a switchboard operator in Newton, retiring in 1989 from United Telephone Company.
Norma was confirmed and baptized in 1943 in Knoxville, and converted to Christianity in 1954 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School for several years and participated in other church activities. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, her family and friends, quilting and helping the ladies at Our Savior Lutheran Church with their sewing and quilting projects; she enjoyed all kinds of music, Normal Rockwell art and live theater.
Survivors are her four children, seven grandchildren (Jeff Borchert, Jim Borchert, Jason Borchert, Jeremy Borchert, Dustin Minner, Lindsay Minner, and Matthew Stout), 11 great-grandchildren, nephew Ted Roberts (Knoxville, Iowa) and niece Cheryl Fowler (Phoenix, AZ); and her many friends near & far.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 67 years, Leland, in 2011, brother Don and sister LaNelle; two daughters-in-law Linda Borchert and Connie Borchert.
A time of remembrance and celebration services will be 11:00a.m., Thursday, September 29, 2016, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with a visitation time one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Memorials may be left to the family in Norma Jean's name or to the Pregnancy Center of Iowa.
