Gertrude passed from this life on Sunday morning, September 25, 2016, at Nelson Manor in Newton.
Gertrude Bernice Slings, 92, was born June 14, 1924, in Platte, South Dakota. She is the daughter of Engel and Dena (Breukelman) Van Zee.
On September 26, 1945, Gertrude was united in marriage with Adrian Hubert (Ed) Slings at the Newton Christian Reformed Church. She was employed twenty plus years as a CNA (Certified Nurses Aid) with Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, she will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was a member of the Newton Christian Reformed Church, Ladies Aid Group at the church and the Metz Community Bible Study Group. Gertrude devoted her life to her family, enjoying all her grandchildren, feeding her birds, gardening, flowers and was a master quilter.
Gertrude is survived by her husband of 71 years, Ed; her daughters and sons-in-law: Sherry and Chuck Stewart of Altoona and Nancy and Jack Swank of Newton; her sons and daughters-in-law: Denny and Georgia Slings of Kellogg and Gary and Susan Slings of Newton; her nine grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law Ed (Andi) Van Zee of Newton; her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Pearl Van Zee, Geneva Van Zee, Mary Lou Kredit, and Betty and Dean Ward; her many nieces and nephews; and her friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
A time of remembrance and celebration services will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at the Newton Christian Reformed Church, with a visitation Tuesday, 5 pm until 7 pm, at the Pence – Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be left to the family in Gertrude’s name or to the Newton Christian Reformed Church or Newton Christian School.
