Obituary of Bernard Waid Crook

Bernard Waid Crook, the son of Lowel Ruben and Rose Ann Clare Crook, was born December 18, 1929 in Newton, Iowa. Bernie served his country in the US Navy. On March 3, 1950, Bernie was united in marriage with Barbara L. Harbour in Newton, IA. Bernie loved to work the land, farming for many years. He worked for the Maytag Company in Newton for 47.5 years, retiring as an industrial engineer. Bernie enjoyed playing cards and watching the horse races. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Bernie died Monday, September 6, 2010 just outside of Newton. He was 80 years old. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barb in 2002; his grandson, Ben in 1999 and his brothers: Clifford, Calvin, Kenny and Jimmy. Those left to honor Bernie's memory include his son, David (Susan) Crook of Newton; his daughter, Deb (Marty) Cross of Newton; his special friend, Betty Ellis of Newton; his four grandchildren, Matt (Raven) Cross of Ames, Nick (Megan) of Sioux Center, IA, Luke Cross of Newton and Emily (Cory) Barnard of Cedar Rapids, IA; his great grandchildren, Logan and Talan Barnard and his sister, Myrna Hill of Newton. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 10th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Family will greet friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated to the Newton Animal Rescue League, the Hospice of Jasper County or the American Cancer Society.
