Maxine L. Atwood Maxine of the Monroe and Newton areas, passed from this life on Monday, January 9, 2017, at Nelson Manor Health Care in Newton. Maxine L. Atwood, 95, was born November 03, 1921, in Monroe, the daughter of Starley G. and Pearl L. (Birkenholz) Acklin. She had attended the Monroe schools. On June 24, 1967, Maxine was united in marriage with John M. Atwood in Newton. She was employed by the Vernon Company in Newton, retiring in 1985, after 30 plus years. Maxine was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She as a member of the Monroe First United Methodist Church and UAW Retirees Union. Maxine is survived by her son Curt (Vicki) James of Newton; daughters: Barbara (Bob) Engle of Marion and Sharon (Paul) Masters of Monroe; her seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; a sister Carolyn Timmins of Monroe; and her friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Holmer James; second husband John Atwood on August 14, 1997; son Larry James; a brother Kenneth Acklin; and a sister and brother-in-law Carolyn and George Timmins. A time of remembrance and celebration of life services will be at a later date, with burial at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the family in Maxine's name or a charity of your choosing.
