Obituary of Steve Hugh Mitrisin
Steve Hugh Mitrisin, 87, of Newton, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, at MercyOne Medical Center in Newton, surrounded by his loving family.
Steve was born on July 16, 1937, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to George and Emma (Cox) Mitrisin. On his 21st birthday, July 16, 1958, he married the love of his life, Madge Louise Crawford, in a little country church in Knoxville, Iowa.
In 1965, Steve and Madge moved to Lafayette, Colorado, where he worked as a motor grader operator, building roads and highways. His proudest accomplishment as an earth mover was creating the runways at the Denver International Airport. He took pride in his work and continued in that field until his retirement in 2003. After many years in Colorado, Steve and Madge returned to Iowa, living in Knoxville until their recent move to Newton in January of this year to be closer to family.
Being a born-again Christian, Steve was a man of deep faith and was an active member of First Baptist Church in Lafayette, and later Faith Baptist Church in Knoxville.
He loved fishing—especially "cat fishin"—and treasured time with his family, especially his grandchildren. A true homebody at heart, Steve found joy in the simple things, like sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee, watching the corn grow across the road.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 67 years, Madge Louise Mitrisin; his children: Jim Mitrisin (Betty) of Camino, CA, Debra Weaver (Harry) of Newton, IA, Laurie Vandecoevering (Leo) of Grant City, MO, and Jennifer Bingham (Bryan) of Overland Park, KS; his brother, Virgil Mitrisin (Sue) of Phoenix, AZ; his sisters, Susanne Vander Martin and Jane Davis, both of Oskaloosa, IA, and Sondra Mitrisin of Missouri; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers James, John, George, Dan, and Bill; and his sisters Marguerite, Kate, and Joyce.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2025, at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to Madge, or to a charity of your choice.
Steve’s quiet strength, steady love, and deep devotion to his family and faith will be dearly missed and always remembered.
