Obituary of Janice O. Sorenson

Janice O. Sorenson, of Newton, the daughter of Howard Clarence, Sr. and Rachel Viola (Larson) Helgevold, was born December 5, 1940 in Holmes, Iowa.  She graduated from the Clarion-Goldfield High School in 1959 and from the University of Iowa in 1964.

On June 22, 1963, Jan was united in marriage with David Gordon Sorenson in Holmes, Iowa.  Jan worked as a Medical Technician for the VA Hospital in Iowa City and as an office manager for Clyde Gardner and her husband, David, in Newton.  Jan was an active member of the Newton Country Club.  She enjoyed golfing, mapping her family tree and many other activities while living in Harbor Oaks, Florida.

Janice died on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.  She was 78 years old.  Jan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David on December 1, 2006, twin sons in infancy, Jeffrey and Scott and her brother, Howard Helgevold, Jr.

Those left to honor Jan’s memory include her sons, Chris (Angela) Sorenson and their children, Nicholas and Nathan; Matt (Carol) Sorenson and their children, Megan and Amber; Doug (Kelly) Sorenson and their children, Hanna, Maddison, Sebastian and Ryanne; her many cousins and her special friend and companion, Doug Morford.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home in Newton.  The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time and immediately following the service during lunch.  Memorials may be designated to Newton High School Activities, where it will be dispersed between the music and athletic departments.
