Biography

Herman Bruxvoort
Funeral services for Herman, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at the Newton Christian Reformed Church. The Pence~Reese Funeral Home in Newton, have been entrusted with the arrangements. A visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 Tuesday, at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorials in Herman's name are being designated to Newton Christian School or to Hospice of Jasper County.
Herman Bruxvoort, 91, the son of Dick and Hattie (Van Kampen) Bruxvoort, was born May 10, 1918 in Sully, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm just North of Sully, and graduated from the Sully Christian School. Herman made his profession of faith at a young age in the Sully Christian Reformed Church.
On May 29, 1941, Herman was united in marriage with Cornelia "Kay" Boender in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They made their home on farms in the Sully, Peoria and Kellogg, Iowa areas. Over the past sixty years, they have lived in the Newton area. After farming, Herman worked for Newton Wholesale for eight years and then for Gordon's Wholesale for twenty-two years as a restaurant supplies salesman, and was known as the "candyman", retiring in 1987. He then worked twenty years at Hy-Vee, as a greeter on a part time basis. He really enjoyed meeting and greeting the customers there. Herman was a faithful member of the Newton Christian Reformed Church, having served as an elder, deacon, teacher and usher for many years. He truly enjoyed his family and friends, yard work, birds, his flowers, all nature, reading, baseball and traveling.
Herman went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Feb.27, 2010, in the Monarch Wing at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. The last of eleven children, Herman was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters: Elizabeth (John) Slater, Nellie (Will D.) Van Wyk, Hattie (Arie) Olsthoorn, Jennie (Gerrit) Jochems, Effie Bruxvoort, Gertrude (Harold) Owen and Bernice (Gilbert) Meinders; his three brothers: Jake, Gerrit and Guy Bruxvoort; and a grandson-in-law Carl Kulczyk.
Those left to honor the memory of Herman are his wife "Kay"; his son Donald (Theresa) Bruxvoort of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; two granddaughters: Jana (Brian) Van Haaften of Chaska, Minnesota and Pam Kulczyk of Des Moines, Iowa; a grandson Brian (Chris) Bruxvoort of Ypsilanti, Michigan; his six great-grandchildren: Tiffany and Reece Van Haaften, Caleb and Ezra Kulczyk and Ursula and Donovan Bruxvoort; many nieces and nephews; and his many neighbors and friends.
Herman was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and showed much affection for his family and church. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
